They also announced the departure of centre-back Matthew Upson to Brighton on loan for the remainder of the season, following a similar deal that saw Rory Delap join Barnsley.

Shea joins the Premier League club for £2.5million on a four-and-a-half-year contract following their successful appeal for a work permit.

And Stoke boss Tony Pulis could not contain his excitement when revealing news of the deal on the club's official website: "It's fantastic news that we have been able to push through a deal.

"Brek is a very, very exciting player, and one who we firmly believe could go on to become an outstanding player for this football club.

"He has terrific pace, a very good left foot and is capable of scoring goals. He has all the tools needed to be a success here."

Butland, who signed for an undisclosed fee on a four-and-a-half-year deal, will remain with his Championship side for the remainder of the current campaign.

The 19-year-old goalkeeper reportedly turned down the chance of a move to Chelsea in order to play first-team football.

He told Sky Sports: "I feel very good, glad to get it done and it's the next step of my career. I'm really looking forward to it.

"I'm glad something's happened now. I feel very lucky to come to a great club and I'm looking forward to it.

"Stoke just ticked all the boxes for me. I've come to a great club, a very solid club which is doing very well in the Premier League with great support as well."

Upson, meanwhile, was delighted to have secured his move away from the Britannia. He said: It's a very good opportunity for me at a time that I have not been playing. It's a chance for me to play.

"I've heard lots of positive things about Gus and his style and the whole package here at Brighton. It is very exciting."
