The Blues, hoping to bounce back quickly from FA Cup embarrassment against Brentford at the weekend, failed to hit their stride for the majority of the first half, with neither side seemingly able or willing to find the target.

Chelsea enjoyed the lion's share of possession, but were for the most part kept frustrated, either by dogged defending from Reading, or poor play in the final third from the likes of Fernando Torres.

A diving header from a set piece from Gary Cahill that drifted wide was the best chance of the half for the Blues until the dying seconds, when Juan Mata finished cleverly from inside the box after a fine chipped assist from Torres.

The second half started in much the same fashion, Chelsea content to keep hold of the ball without really pushing forward in search of another goal, but a second did come after 66 minutes, Frank Lampard heading the ball home after a Mata cross.

With Chelsea holding a two goal cushion, the Blues were content to stick in first gear, not bothering to look for a third.

That approach may have appeared sensible before the introduction of super sub Adam Le Fondre, but the Reading man changed the game after he came on just after the second Blues goal.

Le Fondre pulled a goal back after perfectly timing a run into the box, beating Ross Turnbull with a neat finish, before capitalising on an anxious finish from Chelsea, who are becoming too accustomed to letting leads slip late on.

Le Fondre's second goal came just before the final whistle, the Reading man finishing from deep inside the penalty box.

A draw was the deserved result, with Chelsea not doing enough to earn all three points and Reading spirited enough to claw their way back from what seemed like an inevitable defeat.
