As has happened so often this season, Sir Alex Ferguson's side were forced to come from behind before emerging victorious as the visitors scored in the third minute when a poor back-pass by Michael Carrick allowed Jay Rodriguez to nip in to give the visitors a shock lead.

However, it took United just five minutes to equalise when Wayne Rooney latched onto Shinji Kagawa's dink over the top before firing past Artur Boruc.

Kagawa then shot against the post but in the 27th minute United took the lead. Patrice Evra did well to head Robin Van Persie's free-kick back across goal, allowing Rooney to score from close range.

Van Persie's fierce effort then shaved the top of the crossbar and former Celtic goalkeeper Boruc saved Danny Welbeck's drilled shot with his legs as United threatened to run riot before the interval.

Southampton looked a different side in the second-half and piled forward while United were penned back in their own half for long spells.

Van Persie looked to have wrapped up the win after heading the ball into the back of the net, only to be denied by the off-side flag.

Rickie Lambert and Rodriguez both threatened for Southampton late on but were unable to find the vital goal.
