The Toffees started the game on top and almost went ahead when Victor Anichebe's deflected shot narrowly skimmed the post, and moments later Marouane Fellaini came even closer when his shot hit the up-right.

On 30 minutes the hosts got the goal their domination deserved as Baines made a move into the area and was played in by Leon Osman. The England left-back continued on before unleashing a blasting shot into the roof of the net.

Everton continued to boss the game and in first half injury time they got an opportunity to double their lead when Anichebe was barged over in the penalty area from Claudio Yacob, and up stepped Baines to smash the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

In the second half the Baggies came back into the game and were handed a gift of a goal on 65 minutes. Romelu Lukaku took the ball past Tim Howard and then hit a cross-cum-shot across the goal that John Heitinga needed to just clear, but he took a touch and the ball looped up for Shane Long to nod simply into an open goal.

Graham Dorrans curled a free-kick against the crossbar as West Brom enjoyed a period on top but they couldn't find a second.

Indeed, it was Everton who enjoyed the better chances and Osman wasted the best of them when he shot over from eight yards after Steven Pienaar had seen his effort rebound off the post and into the midfielder's path.
