The midfielder is currently on loan from Argentine side Club Atletico Lanus as a designated player, and made an instant impression on Porter during Timbers' 3-1-friendly win over Colorado Rapids on Tuesday.

"I saw what I thought I would see," said Porter after the opening Desert Friendlies match. "He's a game-changer. He understands the game and understands the flow of the game.

"He knows how to unlock a team with passing. He had some good moments today."

Porter admitted that he didn't expect the team's offensive unit to gel so quickly, and was very happy Valeri has slotted in seamlessly with the rest of his midfield.

"Eight days in, to see a three- or four-man attacking sequence is a positive for me," the Timbers boss added.

"Usually it takes a bit longer to gel. It was interesting to see that Darlington Nagbe and Ryan Johnson and Valeri have already formed a relationship and partnership."
