The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham in their most recent league encounter, Clint Dempsey popping up at the death to level the scores.

Despite claiming just one point from that clash, United still boast a five-point lead over local rivals Manchester City and are unbeaten in 11 matches.

Sir Alex Ferguson will have to make do without the services of winger Ashley Young, who is nursing a knee injury.

Defender Jonny Evans (hamstring) is also expected to miss out, but youngster Nick Powell is back in contention after recovering from a knock.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino will hand a late fitness test to knee injury victim Adam Lallana.

However, striker Guilhermo do Prado and defender Jose Fonte are expected to miss out with knee injuries of their own.

The last time these two sides met, Manchester United came out on top in a five-goal thriller at St Mary's.
