The Blues have endured a disappointing run of form in domestic cup competitions this season, crashing out of the Capital One Cup semi-finals after failing to score in both legs against Swansea, before following that up with a disappointing 2-2 draw at Brentford in the FA Cup fourth round.
Fernando Torres was the saviour on the day as his 82nd-minute equaliser earned a replay at Stamford Bridge and spared the reigning champions the embarrassment of an early exit from a competition they have won four times in the past six years.
A place in Europe's premier club cup competition is, however, still achievable as they find themselves third in the Premier League standings on 45 points, although they cannot afford to rest on their laurels as Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton and Tottenham all have top-four ambitions of their own.
Chelsea skipper Terry is well aware of the task facing the west London club, and has cautioned his team-mates they will have to improve in order to guarantee their place in Europe.
"It's disappointing going to Swansea and not scoring over two legs, then being lackluster at Brentford," Terry told ChelseaTV.
"We came to Brentford and didn't create too much. Fair play to them, they played well but we need to liven up a bit and realise the importance to the fans and the club.
"Champions League football is a must next season. It's difficult but we have a squad and it's down to the players who come in to rotate and play well."
