The former Valencia hitman has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates in the past few weeks, but the Gunners boss made it clear on Tuesday the Catalans are not interested in the sale of the Spain international.

"Barca do not want to sell David Villa. They've made that very clear," Wenger told reporters.

When asked if the club would press on with attempts to sign the 31-year-old, he replied: "No.

"What's important is to buy players who can strengthen the squad. Otherwise, you do nothing. We have enough numbers, quality strikers."

Another name which has been linked to the north London club recently is that of David Beckham, who is currently training with the Gunners. Wenger, though, has been quick to clarify the superstar's unexpected presence at Arsenal's London Colney training ground.

"He called me," he said. "It's purely for fitness, there's no speculation about him signing."

The Gunners entertain Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night, and Wenger is aware there is little margin for error in the game.

"It's a very important game for us. We cannot afford to drop points," the Frenchman said. "It's always a big disappointment to go out of the FA Cup - so you never know what response you get."

The Arsenal manager added he would be restoring some of his rested players to the starting line-up for the game against the Reds, following their narrow 3-2 victory against Championship side Brighton in the FA Cup this past Saturday.
