A goalless first half was soon put aside as Sergio Ramos opened the scoring for the Galacticos in the 54th minute, before the Ronaldo show took over for a pulsating 10 minutes.

The Portuguese superstar began the onslaught in the 62nd minute before adding a second three minutes later, and on 72 minutes he completed his treble, firing home from the penalty spot.

The result left Real third in the standings, but closed the gap on leaders Barcelona temporarily to 12 points, with the Catalans only playing Osasuna later the same day.

Ronaldo looked the brightest player on the pitch throughout the game, and twice tested Miguel Moya early on, although the goalkeeper was equal to the challenge.

The visitors did manage to threaten on the counter-attack through Diego Castro and Pablo Sarabia, although they were unable to find the final ball as stand-in Real keeper Adan remained largely untroubled.

After the break the game turned completely in favour of the hosts, with Moya failing to deal with a cross into the area to allow Ramos to bundle the ball over the line.

After that moment there seemed no way back for Getafe, with Ronaldo scoring his first of the afternoon moments later, sprinting almost the entire length of the pitch to support Mesut Ozil before slamming home his team-mate's pass.

Moments later Madrid went 3-0 up, Angel Di Maria clipping the ball into the area for Ronaldo to duly head home his 20th league goal of the season.

And in a remarkable 10 minutes of individual talent the former Manchester United man grabbed sealed his hat-trick, slotting home a penalty after Luka Modric had been fouled in the area by Alberto Lopo.
