The home side, who were relegated from the Football League last season, were appearing in the fourth round for the first time in their history, having shocked Championship leaders Cardiff City in round three.

However, Callum McManaman helped the Latics move in front with just seven minutes on the clock, winning a penalty after he was sent crashing by Thierry Audel.

Gomez dispatched the spot-kick, despite loan keeper Joe Anyon getting a hand to the ball.

McManaman almost added a second midway through the first-half when he shot narrowly wide from the edge of the area after Anyon punched out a cross.

For the home side, Matt Barnes-Homer threatened twice around the half-hour mark, with debutant keeper Joel Robles making two solid saves to preserve the lead.

On the stroke of half-time Audel could have levelled things up when he was found by Sam Wedgbury, but he could only direct a header straight at Robles.

Straight after the restart Noah Dicko fired straight at Anyon from a good position and then Macc came close as Kieran Murtagh hesitated and allowed Gomez to get in a crucial block.

As time ticked away Barnes-Homer did his best to get his side back in to the game, while sub Dean McDonald shot over and when Barnes-Homer sliced wide in stoppage time the Latics had just done enough to reach round five.
