Lambert: Putting up his dukes

Paul Lambert is adamant that as long as he is in charge of Aston Villa, he can be trusted to address the beleaguered club's poor fortunes.

Struggling in the Premier League and currently sitting 17th on the table, Villa's troubles were compounded on Friday night when they were dumped out of the FA Cup.

A John Marquis late winner at The Den piled the misery on Villa as Millwall progressed to the fifth round of the competition.

Lambert, however, reckons he can still turn it all around.

"There are two ways to deal with it," he said. "You either accept it or come out fighting, and I will keep fighting because I'm not brought up (to accept it).

"I handle it in my own way, I've got to handle it - you are the custodian of the football club and I will try everything I can to turn it around."

The Villans' 2-1 defeat to the Lions has now made it two cup exits this week following the Capital One Cup semi-final disappointment to Bradford City.

Lambert admits the Midlanders' top-flight survival is now their main priority.

"The lads have played a hell of a lot of games and we've not got the biggest of squads. You have to watch what you're doing," the Scot said. "You can't make too many changes but the Premier League is the most important thing."
