The Dutchman was well received upon his arrival in Istanbul on Monday to complete his 10million Euro switch to the 18-time Turkish champions.
Speaking prior to his medical at the club, the 28-year-old said he had sought advice from Real Madrid manager Mourinho, as well as the coach of the Dutch national team, Van Gaal.
He told De Telegraaf: "I've been very well briefed on all sides, very well briefed.
"I called Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal because they have been key figures in my football career and I think their opinion is important.
"They both said the same thing: go!
"They gave me the final push, knowing how Turkish football is on the rise."
The midfielder also stated that next year's World Cup in Brazil was a major contributing factor when making his decision.
He said: "This is all important in view of the World Cup."
