The Scot launched a stinging tirade on the match official following Sunday's 1-1 draw against Tottenham, with the Red Devils boss describing the assistant's performance as "shocking".

The comments came after the linesman failed to flag for what Ferguson thought was a "clear penalty" after Wayne Rooney was seemingly brought down inside the area while United were still 1-0 up.

The veteran tactician also pointed to a previous occasion where the same referee failed to flag a Didier Drogba goal for off-side in 2010, and further claimed "there was no way we were going to get a decision from (Beck)" in the White Hart Lane encounter.

The FA have been quick to respond to the outburst, which they might view as a questioning of Beck's integrity, and Ferguson has until 6pm GMT on Thursday to respond to the association's request for an explanation.

This weekend's result allowed rivals Manchester City to close United's lead at the top of the standings to five points after the Citizens had seen on Fulham 24 hours earlier.
