Two goals apiece from Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria in the space of just 11 minutes added to Gonzalo Higuain's ninth-minute opener to effectively end the match as a contest at half-time.

The 19-year-old, who joined the club from Lens in 2011, so impressed with his side's first half performance, it moved his to insist that Madrid will fight to claw back their 15-point deficit in the Spanish top-flight.

"The team played very well, our first half was spectacular and we are happy with the win," Varane told reporters.

"We always try to play that way, but things don't always go how we want. On Sunday we were very good and safe at the back."

Varane also spoke of Madrid's desire to retain their league title, despite currently sitting third in La Liga with 18 games left of the season.

He added: "We have to go match by match and give our all. The league isn't over until the end and we'll keep fighting.

"Everything is good in the dressing room, there are no problems at all."
