Spurs recently agreed a deal with the Germany international, who will be out of contract with the Bundesliga outfit at the end of the season.

However, it appears Andre Villas Boas can't wait until the end of the current campaign for Holty to make the switch to White Hart Lane.

As a result, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy made contact with the German team, lodging what Schalke general manager Horst Heldt has labelled an "unacceptable" bid.

Heldt said: "There is a request from Tottenham. The offer is not acceptable.

"But the transfer window is still open. Lewis has not become cheaper today."

Despite the controversy surrounding his end-of-season switch to north London on a free transfer, Holtby insists he is focused on performing to the best of his ability for the remainder of the campaign.

Speaking to the assembled press following a 5-4 victory over Hannover on Friday night, the 22-year-old said: "I am not going to just p*** off without busting my a*** for the team.

"I will give my all for Schalke until the last second. Everything else must be decided by the clubs."
