The Gunners won 5-3 in the corresponding fixture last year courtesy of hat-trick from the departed Robin van Persie.
Arsene Wenger's side will be buoyed by their solid win over Swansea City in their FA Cup third-round replay in midweek, and will no doubt look to emulate their feat of last season, albeit without the prolific Dutchman leading the line this time.
Mertesacker, though, is confident his side has what it takes and believes if they show some grit they can topple the Blues again.
"When we put our opponents under pressure we are always dangerous, that must be our target at Chelsea as well," the German International said.
"We showed great confidence against Swansea right from the start. Last season, we showed we can win at Chelsea. Let's show our character and our ability."
Victory at Stamford Bridge will move the north London club back within touching distance of the top four and the 28-year-old insists winning against the league's elite is vitally important when chasing Champions League football.
"Busy weeks are coming and the most important thing is to build up confidence after the defeat against Manchester City.
"If you want to be in the top four, you have to compete with Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham, those teams are in this zone, so we need to win against those four as much as we can.
"That is a good chance to show how good we are."
