The visitors started brightly and World Player of the Year Lionel Messi had already missed one chance before he gave the Catalans the lead on seven minutes.

Andres Iniesta weaved his way into the box and found Messi, who made no mistake with a drilled effort from 12 yards out.

The writing appeared to be on the wall for Real Sociedad as Barcelona continued to march forward and Pedro struck a post just a few minutes later, as they went in search of a second.

The search didn't last long as the same player doubled the league leaders advantage, as Dani Alves beat the offside trap on 25 minutes and squared the ball across the six yard box for Pedro to roll in from close range.

Just before the break it looked like Messi was going to put the game out of reach but his effort came back off the post and within seconds Sociedad were back in it.

Carlos Vela led the counter-attack and played in Gonzalo Castro, who fired a vicious shot across Victor Valdes and into the far corner.

Sociedad emerged for the second half with renewed hope and it was well and truly game on just before the hour mark, when Gerard Pique was dismissed for a second bookable offence, much to his manager's displeasure.

That proved to be the turning point as the hosts began to dream of the impossible and within seven minutes they were back on level terms, as Castro's drive took a wicked deflection off substitute Javier Mascherano and looped past Valdes.

It became a case of damage limitation for the visitors after that and just as Barca looked to have kept their unbeaten record going, Sociedad managed to snatch the all important winner in added time.

Carlos Martinez rolled a clever cross in behind the Barcelona defence and Agirretxe arrived to toe-poke the ball beyond a stranded Valdes and into the net.

There was no time left for Tito Vilanova's side to rescue it and the final unbeaten record in the Primera Division has gone and Socieded have given hope to the chasing pack as they inflict Barca's first loss of the campaign.
