The home side dominated the first half but they found Adam Federici in sparkling form.

Firstly, Yohan Cabaye had a shot saved superbly on 14 minutes before the Frenchman found Papiss Cisse in the box two minutes later, only for the Reading stopper to divert his header past the post.

Pavel Pogrebnyak fired wide after being set up at close range by Gareth McCleary on 27 minutes in a rare Reading foray forward in the first 45, just before Federici twice denied Cisse - once with a volley inside the area and then with a point-blank save following good play by Mathieu Debuchy down the right.

Newcastle finally took a well-deserved lead on 35 minutes, when Cabaye lined up a free kick just outside the area and curled a fantastic shot into the top corner of Federici's net.

Reading came close to an equaliser when Pogrebnyak spurned a great chance on 62 minutes, before substitute Le Fondre turned the game around and stunned the St James' Park faithful.

On 71 minutes he scrambled home a goal from close range when Jimmy Kebe put the ball across the six yard box and then seven minutes later he smacked the ball in from inside the area after another cross from the same man fell to him in space.

Cisse missed a great chance to get Newcastle level when he fired over on 87 minutes with only Federici to beat as Reading held on to steal three points and heap more pressure on Alan Pardew.
