Roberto Martinez's side are struggling of late and have won just once in their previous nine Premier League games to sit in 17th place.

The Latics are also dealing with a major injury crisis and it looks set to continue.

Full-back Antolín Alcaraz (groin) is the only player expected back any time soon, with newcomer Roger Espinoza likely to slot in at right-back and make his debut.

Defender Ivan Ramis (ligament), Adrián Lopez (hamstring), along with midfielders Ben Watson (broken leg), Albert Crusat (knee) and winger Ryo Miyaichi (ankle) are all enduring lengthy spells on the sidelines.

On-loan striker Angelo Henriquez could feature but he will likely start on the bench.

Meanwhile, the Black Cats lost their last game to Championship side Bolton to crash out of the FA Cup at the third-round stage.

The Wearsiders will look to bounce back from their disappointing cup exit, but will have to manage without captain Lee Cattermole who is out with a knee injury.

They will, however, welcome back Steven Fletcher from illness for the trip.

Martin O'Neill's side will try to replicate what they managed to do earlier in the season and take all three points away from the Lancashire club.
