The Copa del Rey quarter-final first-leg meeting between the La Liga sides was their second in four days.

This, after Tito Vilanova's side ran out 3-1 winners at La Roselada in the Primera Division on Sunday.

The Catalans made a positive start to the match with Alexis Sanchez coming close to opening the scoring after six minutes.

However, it was Malaga who took the lead when Manuel Iturra dispossessed Thiago in a dangerous area and made the Barca midfielder pay by slotting a shot into the bottom corner of Jose Pinto's goal.

The away side barely had time to celebrate, though, as Barca responded immediately through Lionel Messi.

The Argentine maestro equalised for the hosts when he stole the ball from Weligton and curled a left-footed shot around the 'keeper.

The Blaugrana were ahead just four minutes later when Carles Puyol headed home from Thiago's corner.

Sanchez should have increased Barca's lead when he side-footed wide later in the first half, but there was a surprising lack of chances after the interval.

Seba Fernandez came close to bringing Malaga level when his superb volley from 18-yards out was somehow turned away by Pinto.

There then seemed to be no hope for Manuel Pellegrini's side when Monreal was sent off for a professional foul on Pedro after 75 minutes.

But in the dying moments of the game, Camacho sent a thumping header into the back of the net from Duda's cross, placing his side in a strong position for the second-leg tie in Andalusia next week.
