This, after Wayne Rooney's missed penalty in United's 1-0 win over West Ham in their FA Cup third round replay on Wednesday.

The Red Devils were awarded the 79th minute spot-kick after referee Phil Dowd adjudged Jordan Spence to have handled in the box.

Rooney stepped up with the opportunity to kill the game off, only for the England striker to blaze the ball well over the crossbar.

The 27-year-old's miss takes the Premier League leaders's penalty record to five missed and only four scored for the season.

"I think we have to improve at that, I don't think it is just one of those things," said Ferguson.

"A penalty kick is your opportunity to take advantage of a foul or a handball or whatever and score a goal."

The United boss went on to cite Southampton's current penalty conversion rate, while also paying homage to the phenomenal record of St Mary's cult hero Mattew Le Tissier.

"If you get a penalty kick, really... there has been talk about (the good penalty record of) Rickie Lambert at Southampton," added Ferguson.

"That is what taking penalty kicks is about.

"There have been several great examples over the years, Matthew Le Tissier scoring 47 out of 48.

"A penalty kick is your opportunity to take advantage of a foul or a handball or whatever and score a goal."
