Walters scored two own goals and missed a penalty against Chelsea at the weekend and was lucky to make the starting line-up against the Eagles after Tony Pulis considered replacing him with veteran Michael Owen.

But Pulis gave the 29-year-old the chance to atone for his nightmare game against the Blues and the striker didn't disappoint, scoring twice in extra time to seal a 4-1 win for the Potters progress into the fourth round of football's oldest competition.

"I got a bit of stick from the lads at the weekend, but most of that came from me kicking the ball against my own head, before I scored the two own goals. It's nice to get a couple at the right end tonight though.

"I feel great after this one and it is nice. I just had to persevere and keep going and what a great ball from Matty Etherington for my first goal. He put those kind of balls in all game," said Walters.

"Once we went into extra-time we had the energy and the fitness to go on and win the game."

The Republic of Ireland International admits its been a turbulent period in the aftermath of his highly publicised disaster at the Britannia but was happy to put it behind him.

"It's been a funny few days for me, without doubt, but it's just important not to get too high with the highs and too low with the lows," he told the club's official website.

"In football you have ups and downs, but you have to try and remain level headed at all times - because if you don't then you get affected by things.

"I was confident coming into the game. There was never an issue about that. What happened on Saturday happened on Saturday and you just have to move on."
