Boselli: Winning goal

A fine strike from Mauro Boselli was enough to help Wigan Athletic secure a hard-fought win over a determined Bournemouth on Tuesday.

On a bobbly surface at Dean Court it was the home side who had the first chance when Wes Thomas had an effort which just missed the target in the eighth minute.

However, it was the Premier League side who took the lead in the 18th minute, when Bournemouth gave away possession. Boselli powered towards goal before unleashing a fine strike into the top corner from 20 yards out.

The home side did not let the goal dampen their spirits and they almost levelled matters just before the break when Eunan O'Kane produced a 20-yard strike of his own but his effort cannoned off the angle of the Wigan post and crossbar.

Bournemouth continued to put pressure on the Latics in the second-half and could have equalised when Steve Cook's long throw found Josh McQuoid at the back post but he could not capitalise for the Cherries.

Substitute keeper Ali Al-Habsi was the man to thank for Wigan holding on as he produced a fine save to tip the ball onto the crossbar on 88 minutes, as the Latics saw out the final whistle to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
