The Trotters raced to an early 2-0 lead through Lee Chung-Yong and Marvin Sordell in the original tie, before an inspired second-half fightback earned the Black Cats a replay.

Martin O'Neill will surely expect a better showing from his side this time around after coming so close to an embarrassing third-round exit.

If the Wearsiders are to progress to the fourth round they will have to do it without defender Wes Brown and captain Lee Cattermole, who both remain sidelined with knee injuries.

Carlos Cuellar and Danny Rose are both doubts for the replay, while Alfred N'Diaye, who joined the club last week from Bursaspor, is ineligible for the cup-tie.

The Premier League outfit have won three of their last five fixtures at home, including a famous win over champions Manchester City on Boxing Day, to sit in 14th place on 25 points.

For the visitors, Matt Mills (thigh) and midfielder Mark Davies (shoulder) are doubtful, while David Wheater (knee) is close to returning to full fitness and may feature if manager Dougie Freedman decides to risk him.

Freedman has a plethora of striking options to choose from following the return to action of Benik Afobe against Millwall at the weekend, and now has captain Kevin Davies, David N'Gog, Marvin Sordell and Afobe all fit and raring to go.
