The Belgian centre-back was sent off by referee Mike Dean in the 75th minute of the encounter at the Emirates Stadium for what looked to be a studs-up challenge on Jack Wilshere.
Kompany now looks set to miss games against Fulham and Queens Park Rangers as well as the FA Cup fourth-round tie against either Stoke or Crystal Palace.
However, City manager Roberto Mancini has come out in support of his skipper, claiming that Dean made the wrong call, and confirmed that the club will challenge the dismissal.
Mancini told Sky Sports: "This is not a red card, absolutely not, he has one foot in and takes the ball. I think the referee made a mistake.''
The defending Premier League champions are already without Yaya Toure, who is away on AFCON duty, so the loss of another influential figure in Kompany comes at a very inopportune time.
It's not the first time the 26-year-old centre-back has seen red for a challenge of this nature, having previously received his marching orders against Manchester United for a tackle on Nani.
Kompany later revealed he has no intention to alter the way he goes into challenges, saying on Twitter: "About the tackle: If the ball is overrun by the opponent and a 50/50 challenge occurs, collision is inevitable.
"Ultimately I'm a defender: Appeal may work or not. I will never pull out of a challenge, as much as I will never intend to injury [sic] a player.''
