The Red Devils dominated the first half and could have led by more than one goal at the break.

Robin van Persie opened the scoring in sublime fashion on 19 minutes when he stroked home Patrice Evra's low cross to cap off a flowing move from United.

In the final few minutes of the half Tom Cleverley went close to adding a second when he volleyed narrowly wide, and the Reds survived a goalmouth scramble thanks to some brave goalkeeping from Jose Reina.

On 54 minutes the hosts doubled their lead. Van Persie's free-kick was met by Evra at the far post and his powerful header found the net via a deflection off the unaware Nemanja Vidic.

Moments later the Merseysiders had their lifeline. Steven Gerrard's shot was well saved by David De Gea, but Daniel Sturridge reacted quickest to turn home the rebound.

Sturridge squandered a chance to level when he fired over from close range late on, but the Premier League leaders hung on to claim the three points and do the double over their North West rivals.
