Goals from Sebastian Larsson, Adam Johnson and James McClean gave Martin O'Neill's side all three points, as the home side dominated for the majority of the game.

David Vaughan saw a strike go narrowly wide after a Johnson effort was deflected his way on four minutes, but Sunderland then went ahead with only eight minutes on the clock.

The Hammers failed to clear their lines, giving the ball straight to Larsson, around 25 yards out, and he needed only one touch to control it, before he unleashed a rocket of a strike that arrowed straight into the top corner.

West Ham struggled to get into the game as the first half went past, and then a second goal just after half time doubled the home side's advantage.

A quick counter attack from Sunderland saw Stephan Sessegnon square the ball to McClean, whose shot was saved before Hammers defender Dan Potts dallied on the ball, rebounding to Johnson, who had the simple task of tapping home.

Matt Jarvis and Alou Diarra had efforts for the Hammers but they were poor throughout and the tie was wrapped up, when McLean got the third on 74 minutes.

Another counter ended when Sessegnon sliced a left footed shot that fell into the path of McClean, and he slotted home from close range.

Simon Mignolet pulled off late saves from Ricardo Vaz Te and James Tomkins, but it was a simple win overall for O'Neill's men.
