The hosts were able to welcome back midfield playmaker Steven Pienaar after a slight knock, while City made four changes to the side who won 2-0 at Chelsea in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final in midweek.

The Toffees made a fast start with Michel Vorm being forced to save from Victor Anichebe and Nikica Jelavic early on.16 minutes into the match a Jelavic header was cleared off the line by the alert Dwight Tiendalli following a corner.

On the half-hour mark Ashley Williams came to the rescue for the Swans, after Anichebe pushed an effort goalwards.

City's lone chance came nine minutes before the interval, as Nathan Dyer played in Michu, but the Spaniard's effort from a narrow angle was tipped onto the top of the crossbar by Tim Howard.

There were more chances shortly before half time as Marouane Fellaini shot weakly at Vorm and Leon Osman then headed wide, the home side ending the first period on top.

The home side opened the second half strongly again as Vorm was forced to turn away a stinging drive from Phil Neville, before Sylvain Distin headed over from a corner.

Fellaini was unable to dig out a chance on the hour mark as the Toffees continued to dominate and 15 minutes from time Phil Jagielka headed over from a Baines set-piece delivery.

As time ticked away the home side ran out of ideas, but they still had a late chance to snatch all three points, only for Jelavic to fire over after being fed by substitute Apostolos Vellios.
