Gerrard: Too old?

Steven Gerrard has announced his opposition to the policy Liverpool have adopted of signing "young, bright, British players" in an attempt to reestablish themselves under boss Brendan Rodgers.

The club's most recent signings include 22-year-old Joe Allen, 21-year-old Fabio Borini and 23-year-old Daniel Sturridge and the Reds skipper feels they should consider a player in a higher age bracket.

In eighth place in the Premier League standings, some 21 points off the top of the table, Liverpool are in need of a signing that can help bridge that gap - much like Gary McAllister, who signed as a 35-year-old in 2000.

Gerrard said: "I disagree with the policy to be honest.

"I've seen many signings throughout the world who have gone to clubs at the age of 28, 29 or even older and done fantastic jobs. Gary McAllister when he came here, for one.

"I can understand the policy that everyone wants young, bright, British players - but I don't agree 100% that that should be the only way.

"I learned bucket loads from Gary McAllister."

He added: "The main example at the moment is if Chelsea don't keep Frank Lampard. Someone is going to get a bargain. What is he, 34?"

"It's not my business what Chelsea do but if they don't renew Frank's contract someone else is going to get a really good player for a few years."
