Van Persie: Impact player

Robin van Persie's move to Manchester United would always have been a catalyst in the Premier League title race, claims former boss Arsene Wenger.

Top of the league scoring charts with 16 goals, Van Persie's off-season switch from Arsenal to Old Trafford has lived up to the hype which accompanied his £24million deal.

His prolific form in front of goal, as well as the ease at which he has slotted into the United set-up, has already had Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini ruing having missed out on luring the Dutchman to Eastlands.

Wenger, however, reckons it took a few calls from Red Devils counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson to decide Van Persie's new employer.

"It was a very professional phone call (from Ferguson) and there was more than one. I will tell you the rest another day," said Wenger, whose side host City on Sunday.

"You know when you sell Robin van Persie to Manchester United, that (they lead the league) will be the case.

"Robin is one of the best strikers in the world and you know he will score goals for them."

He added: "If he went to City he would have been just another striker in a bunch of world-class players."

Wenger also admitted that no matter where Van Persie went he would succeed because his talent wouldn't allow for him to not be.

"Robin is at the peak of his game. He has a high level of confidence in his qualities and knows his game well," the Frenchman added.

"He is more patient today than he was five or six years ago, now he can stay up front.

"Sometimes in games you don't see him for 20 minutes, but he knows he will get a chance at some stage and that he will use it.

"Before he always came back in midfield, but now he stays there and uses his killer instinct much better."
