Barcelona took a 2-0 lead into the second leg at Camp Nou and began the game with Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi on the substitutes bench, although that did not stop the La Liga leaders controlling the game from start to finish.

Thiago Alcantara opened the scoring after 17 minutes following a period of sustained pressure, finishing coolly past Cordoba goalkeeper Mikel Saizar.

Villa added his first goal of the night moments later with a superb solo effort and doubled his tally within five minutes, firing a shot into the back of the net from Sergi Roberto's lay-off.

Thiago was inches away from getting a brace himself as his curling shot from 18-yards came back off the post.

Sanchez stretched Barcelona's lead ten minutes after half-time when he headed in Thiago's corner and put the final nail in the coffin late on by bundling in a rebound from Christian Tello's spilled shot.

Villa should have wrapped up his hat-trick midway through the second-half when he scooped a shot over from Sanchez's cross but it was an impressive performance from the 31-year-old and will have done his chances of getting back into the first-team no harm.

The Catalan giants face Malaga in the quarter-finals of the competition.
