Stephen El Sharaawy got the visitors off to a flying start just six minutes after kick-off, turning in a well placed Kevin-Prince Boateng cross.

Allegri's team were, however, unable to consolidate their lead, and the Old Lady equalised through a Sebastian Giovinco free kick before half-time.

The second half presented both sides with chances but neither were able to convert until Mirko Vucinic eventually sealed the Bianconeri's place in the semi-finals, grabbing the winner shortly after kick-off in extra time.

The 45-year-old was left licking his wounds after a game that his team may have won, had they not wasted their chances.

"I'm happy about the players' performance," Allegri told the clubs official website. "But we missed a few chances in the second half and it's a shame."

The Rossoneri continue to rebuild after the mass exit of their old guard last summer and have had to rely primarily on young players for much of the season, this game was no different.

"We had a few chances to equalise but we couldn't do it. We ended the game with four players on the field who are 20 years old. The road that the club is on is the right one but time is needed. (Kevin-Prince) Boateng played a good game, he has always played well when he plays out wide and he made very few mistakes,"

"(Bakaye) Traore came on well just as Bojan and (M'Baye) Niang did. The team is growing and now we have to think about Sampdoria as that's an important game for us."

Focus will now shift back to the League, where Milan currently occupy 7th place, are seven points out of a Champions League place and a massive 14 points behind Juve in first.

They travel to 14th placed Sampdoria, who beat Juventus in their last game, on Saturday.
