The Dutchman came off the bench on Saturday to keep alive United's FA Cup hopes, thanks to an injury-time equaliser in the 2-2 draw at West Ham which set up a replay.

The former Arsenal star has scored 16 Premiership goals in 21 matches for United, and has a further three goals in the UEFA Champions League this season.

It's not only Van Persie's goals that are pleasing his boss, but also the manner in which the 29-year-old's coolness and composure are rubbing off on his team-mates.

"He's at a mature age now," said Ferguson. "He's brought that maturity to our front line, and his performance after coming on was tremendous.

"You never do that [lose hope] with our team. When you're 2-1 down with a couple of minutes left you just hope you get a break.

"But the manner of goal - the pass from Ryan Giggs and first touch from Robin van Persie and his finish is absolutely world class, absolutely fantastic."
