The Red Devils had taken a 23rd minute lead through Tom Cleverley, but a brace from James Collins (27, 59) handed the Hammers the lead just before the hour mark.

Sam Allardyce's men looked to be heading for the famous win, but Van Persie showed some masterful control to bring down a 50-yard pass before rolling his shot under the goalkeeper and into the back of the net with 91 minutes gone on the clock.

The visitors dominated the early stages of the game and created the first chance when Javier Hernandez was inches away from turning in Chris Smalling's cross.

Alou Diarra and Nemanja Vidic had headers cleared off the line at either end, while Danny Welbeck bundled the ball into the back of the net for Manchester United, only for Hernandez to be pulled back for offside in the build-up.

The Mexican international proceeded to set up Tom Cleverley for United's opener as the England midfielder finished expertly with a curling shot.

A resilient West Ham side equalised just five minutes later when Joe Cole, making his second debut for the East London club, crossed for Collins who headed home from eight-yards.

Joe Cole made a good impression on his second debut at the Boleyn Ground and created Collins' second goal before the hour mark with another cross from the left flank.

Carlton Cole almost sealed a Hammers win in the 87th minute when he poked wide from close range.

The home side were made to rue the miss minutes later when Van Persie latched onto Ryan Giggs' through ball and sent a devastating low shot past Jussi Jaaskelainen.
