Roberto Martinez saw his men fall behind before half-time when, on 41 minutes, Cherries midfielder Eunan O'Kane unleashed an incredible long-range shot into the top corner, giving 40-year-old goalkeeper Mike Pollitt no chance.

New Wigan signing Angelo Henriquez, on loan from Manchester United, was introduced for the second half and he almost got his debut off to a dream start when his header from David Jones' free-kick clipped the crossbar.

Maynor Figueroa saw a stunning drive from distance come back off the woodwork as Wigan began to ask questions of the League One side and they got their breakthrough on 70 minutes.

Referee Robert Madley awarded a penalty for Josh McQuoid's foul on Emmerson Boyce and Jordi Gomez scored on the follow-up after his spot-kick was saved by Shwan Jalal.

Wigan now face a midweek trip to the south coast to face a Bournemouth side who remain unbeaten under Eddie Howe since his re-appointment in October.
