It did not take City long to establish their dominance in Eastlands as Carlos Tevez was fouled on the edge of the box and wasted little time stepping up to smash the resultant free-kick into the back of the net, leaving Jonathan Bond in the Watford goal with no chance.

Watford tried to work their way back themselves back into it but Gareth Barry all but put the game to bed shortly before the half-time break, the midfielder finishing a stunning move from the home side, heading the ball home after lovely build-up play from David Silva and James Milner.

Shortly after half-time Milner almost added a third to City's haul, but his shot was deflected wide of the target.

Mario Balotelli, always one to grab the headlines, entered the game as a substitute after 70 minutes, but it was another man off the bench who had the final say, Marcos Lopes tapping home after a shot from Balotelli was well saved.
