The United States midfielder opened the scoring after 14 minutes when he steered in Gareth Bale's flick-on, and he almost added a second moments later but was denied by Coventry keeper Joe Murphy.

Dempsey then played a part as Spurs doubled their lead as his shot deflected into the path of Bale, who volleyed home from inside the box.

The duo linked up again three minutes later to extend the lead as Dempsey climbed above everyone to head Bale's corner into the back of the net.

Steven Caulker missed Tottenham's best chance of the second half when he headed wide from a corner while Dempsey came closest to securing a hat-trick as his free-kick flashed wide of Murphy's post.

Coventry failed to trouble the Premier League side but came close to grabbing a consolation goal with a double chance in the second half, but Adam Barton's shot was blocked by Caulker before William Edjenguel's header from the resulting corner was well saved by Brad Friedel.
