The Saints started the game strongly and took the lead through Jay Rodriguez who fired home from the edge of the area after 22 minutes.

The goal only lifted the holders, though, with the Blues equalising on 35 minutes as Ba marked his debut with the first of his two goals, Juan Mata's clipped ball probably heading for the back of the net but the Senegal international made sure as he lashed the ball into the roof of the net.

The west London giants continued to push and went ahead on the stroke of half-time, Ashley Cole doing most of the hard work after breaking into the area from out wide and cutting the ball back to Victor Moses, who took one touch to control before rifling his shot low past the goalkeeper.

The game carried on in very much the same vein in the second half and Rafa Benitez's men made the perfect start as Branislav Ivanovic towered above his marker before sending a textbook header down and into the back of the net following a wonderful delivery from Mata.

The Blues continued plugging away at the defence, and Ba grabbed a simple double after slotting home Hazard's slide pass inside the six-yard area.

The hosts were then very unlucky to have conceded a penalty as Frank Lampard's lifted pass hit the chest of Maya Yoshida, but the referee adjudged the defender to have handled the ball, with Chelsea's veteran midfielder stepping up to fire home from the spot.
