The Seagulls were looking for back-to-back wins over the Toon after knocking them out at the fourth round stage of the competition last season and made a bright start, Newcastle's James Perch clearing off his own line early on.

Gus Poyet's men then deservedly went ahead in the 33rd minute when Wayne Bridge's cross found Orlandi in the box, the Spaniard bringing the ball down and flicking it past Rob Elliot on the turn.

Newcastle struggled throughout the third round tie and their job was made even tougher just after the hour mark when Shola Ameobi was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence for a foul on David Lopez.

The Toon's miserable day was compounded three minutes before full-time when Hoskins made it 2-0, Lopez slipping the ball through and the former Watford striker dispatching it into the back of the net with a cool finish through Elliot's legs.
