The Blacks Cats progressed all the way to the quarter-finals of the competition last season before they lost 2-0 to Everton in a replay, having drawn the initial sixth-round tie 1-1.

However, Martin O'Neill's side suffered defeats in their last two Premier League games and they will be keen to return to winning ways this weekend when the Trotters visit the Stadium of Light.

And O'Neill is planning to make several changes to his starting line-up as the festive fixtures have taken its toll on his small squad.

David Vaughan, Fraizer Campbell, Connor Wickham and Titus Bramble are all in line to start against the Championship outfit after the quartet sat out the 2-2 draw with Swansea on New Year's day.

However, skipper Lee Cattermole, Wes Brown (both knee) and John O'Shea (hamstring) remain on the sidelines through injury, while Ji Dong-Won is unavailable having joined on loan for the rest of the season.
