The Magpies exited the competition at the fourth round last season following a 1-0 defeat to the Seagulls, and they will be keen to return the favour this weekend at the Falmer Stadium.

Alan Pardew's side are desperate to return to winning ways after losing their last three games in the Premier League, which has left them in 15th place in standings on 20 points, just two clear of the relegation zone.

And Pardew is missing a number of key players for the cup tie, with midfielder Cheick Tiote unavailable after he left for the Africa Cup of nations with Ivory Coast, while striker Demba Ba sits the match out as he finalises a move to Chelsea.

Gael Bigirimana is struggling to shake off a dead leg, Steven Taylor (hamstring) and Yohan Cabaye (groin) have both returned to training but this game comes too soon for the duo.

Ryan Taylor (knee), Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), Jonas Gutierrez, Dan Gosling and Haris Vuckic (all knee) remains on the sidelines through injury.
