United have not won the competition since 2004 when they beat Milwall, a result which marked the 11th time the Red Devils have lifted the trophy.

The two clubs have already met this season, with United recording a 1-0 home win in the Premier League.

West Ham are currently in 11th position and will have new signing Joe Cole available for the game.

Other team news for the Hammers is that Andy Carroll is still a few weeks away from recovering from injury, while Mohamed Diame and George McCartney are also sidelined.

James Collins and Kevin Nolan are back in contention for a start after having been suspended.

The Old Trafford side are a team in form at the moment, having won their last three Premier League games to top the standings by seven points over Manchester City.

Michael Carrick is unlikely to feature against his former club as he is expected to be rested by Sir Alex Ferguson, along with Patrice Evra and possibly Robin van Persie, while Wayne Rooney remains sidelined with injury.

Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling will most probably start for United as they continue to find full fitness after lengthy injury lay-offs, while Phil Jones could make the match day squad.

Nani and Anderson are still unavailable due to injury.
