Mancini had stated at a press conference after the game that "maybe the referee ate too much for Christmas" after the Italian felt he missed a clear foul on Pablo Zabaleta in the build up to Adam Johnson's winner.
City have at the same time questioned why Mancini is being investigated and Sir Alex Ferguson is not, after his very visible verbal confrontations with Mike Dean prior to the start to the second half of Manchester United's 4-3 win over Newcastle.
The FA have defended their decision, saying that Mancini delivered his comments without the presence of Friend whereas Dean explained his experience with Ferguson was 'cordial'.
Mancini could face a touchline ban as a result of his comments, although he is more likely to receive a ban, or even possibly just a warning about his future conduct.
