The defending Spanish champions currently find themselves 16 points behind their fierce rivals Barca at the halfway point in the current campaign.

Los Blancos have disappointed thus far, winning just 10 of their 17 matches played, losing four and drawing three - compared to the Blaugrana's record of 16 wins and just one draw.

The capital club are currently off the pace in La Liga in third place behind Atletico Madrid.

Speaking before his final match in charge of Catalunya - a 1-1 friendly draw with Nigeria, Cruyff told reporters: "At this stage of the season Real Madrid being 16 points behind Barcelona can only be called a failure."

Madrid's poor form may have triggered the off-field controversy involving manager Jose Mourinho and captain Iker Casillas with the Spanish goalkeeper dropped for the recent 3-2 loss to Malaga.

Cruyff added that he felt Mourinho's decision to drop Casillas was based on more than just the player's current form, saying: "You don't lose your place overnight."

Mourinho's team have only managed to win one of their last four games in the league, which has put further pressure on them to succeed in the UEFA Champions League this term.
