The England international's future has been hanging in the balance following his apparent reluctance to sign a new deal at the club, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The former Southampton youngster has been linked to a number of clubs leading up to the January transfer window, but the midfielder-come-striker's representatives finally met with Arsenal on Wednesday to discuss his future at the club.

Walcott is undoubtedly in a rich vein of form and scored his second hat-trick of the season against Newcastle last Saturday to make him the Gunners' top goal scorer, while his deflected free-kick against the Saints on New Year's Day ensured Arsenal emerged from that clash with a point.

He said after the Toon clash: "I'm sure that something will be sorted very soon.

"I've always said I wanted to stay and I enjoy playing for this team. Now we will just see what happens.

"I will continue to play my football and let the people who look after me and the club talk to each other and go from there."

And Wenger more recently added: "My desire is to extend his contract. He belongs here and hopefully we can do it."

The French boss will hope to have the issue settled before he loses the services of Gervinho for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, ahead of busy fixture list that sees them up against Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool in the coming month.
