The home side were shorn of the services of leading scorer Demba Ba, who was omitted as he prepares to move to Chelsea, while the visitors welcomed back Marouane Fellaini after a three-match ban.

The hosts made the perfect start within two minutes as a long free-kick by Tim Krul was missed by everyone and Papiss Cisse swooped to head over the stranded Tim Howard.

Everton responded well to going behind and carved out a couple of openings, but on the half-hour mark the hosts almost doubled their lead when James Perch headed against the post from an inswinging Vernun Anita free-kick from the left.

Right on the stroke of half-time the Toffees drew level as Leighton Baines smashed home an amazing free-kick from all of 35 yards out, swerving a left-foot drive beyond the outstretched hand of Krul.

Early in the second half Shola Ameobi stabbed a chance wide from eight yards and he was made to pay on the hour mark as Anichebe arrived to convert from a well-placed Nikica Jelavic ball in from the left.

Cisse then had a header blocked by Johnny Heitinga close to the line as the Magpies went in search of an equaliser.

Davide Santon forced Howard into action twice in the closing minutes, but Everton held on through six minutes of added time to secure a valuable three points which lift them up to fifth place in the Premier League table.
