Rafa Benitez opted to rotate his squad and leave Eden Hazard and Juan Mata on the bench, something which came back to haunt him as Chelsea struggled in the final third.
It was a terrible first half, the major talking point being a fourth minute tackle by Marko Marin. He overran the ball and launched into Stephane Mbia, a nasty lunge that could have easily resulted in a red, though only a yellow was given.
Oscar and Fernando Torres wasted half chances in a poor first 45 minutes but Chelsea came close to taking the lead just after half-time. Marin did well to get to the byline and he fired a low cross across the face of the goal that Victor Moses failed to prod home from six yards out.
Julio Cesar pulled off a brilliant block to prevent Fernando Torres on 53 minutes before Frank Lampard had the ball in the back of the net on 67 minutes, only for the offside flag to rule it out.
Chelsea were poor and for all their possession struggled to crack open a stubborn QPR, and it was former Blue Wright-Phillips who got what proved to be the winning goal with 78 minutes on the clock.
A Hoops corner came out to Adel Taarabt on the edge of the area, who laid it into the path of the winger who drilled it low into the bottom corner from 20 yards out.
Chelsea tried to get back into it but failed to create a quality chance and the visitors saw out the game to win all three points.
