The visitors made a perfect start as Pavel Pogrebnyak headed home a rebound in the fourth minute after an Ian Harte free-kick crashed back out off the crossbar.

Their lead lasted just six minutes before Gylfi Sigurdsson drifted over a corner from the left and Michael Dawson arrived to head home at the near post.

Spurs then dominated from that point on, with Adam Federici making several good saves to keep the Royals on level terms, denying the busy Jermain Defoe on a couple of occasions.

Defoe also smashed a shot agonisingly wide of a post with 10 minutes of the half to go, with Federici rooted to the spot, before the goalkeeper denied Mousa Dembele and Emmanuel Adebayor within a matter of seconds.

Six minutes into the second half, the hosts had the lead as Aaron Lennon crossed from the right and Adebayor rose at the far post to head home.

It looked to be enough before Brian McDermott's side finally pushed forward, with Pogrebnyak having a shot saved by Hugo Lloris and then heading wide from the follow-up.

After Jimmy Kebe had a shot deflected behind, Andre Villas-Boas' charges finally put the game to bed as substitute Clint Dempsey let fly from 30 yards out and a big deflection looped the ball high over the stranded Federici.

Scott Parker almost added a fourth with a cracking drive from distance which forced a superb finger-tip save from Federici, as Spurs finished the game well on top.
