The Hammers started the game brightly and did not have to wait long for the deadlock to be broken as on the third minute Winston Reid was brought down in the box by Ryan Bennett, before Noble stepped up to score from the penalty spot.

West Ham continued to look strong with the ball and they extended their lead on the 26th minute when O'Brien found himself free in the area before directing the ball past Mark Bunn at the near post.

The home side really should have been three goals clear on 36 minutes but, with one of the misses of the season so far, Carlton Cole managed to put the ball over the crossbar from no more than two yards out.

There were very few chances in the second-half but Ricardo Vaz Te came close to grabbing a third for the Hammers, although his header bounced off the post on the 65th minute.

The Canaries did manage to pull a goal back late on when Elliott Bennett's cross found Russell Martin, who produced a fine volley to score on the 90th minute.

However it was not enough and West Ham held on to claim all three points and make a perfect start to 2013.
