The Latics ran out 1-0 victors last time United came to town, but league form suggests a different story this time around.

Roberto Martinez's side are genuine relegation candidates this season and have won just one match in their last seven, putting them in 16th place, just one clear of the relegation zone.

They did, however, beat Aston Villa 3-0 in their last outing, boosting confidence coming into this New Year's Day fixture.

The hosts have no new injury worries, and the Spanish manager is set to name an unchanged line-up for the visit of the Red Devils.

Antolin Alcaraz has almost recovered from a groin injury, but is unlikely to feature. Albert Crusat (knee), Ryo Miyaichi (ankle), Piscu (hamstring) and Ben Watson (shin) are all out of contention for the match.

The league leaders, on the other hand, seem to be flying at the moment. They are seven points clear at the summit and have lost only once in their last 10 fixtures.

Sir Alex Ferguson's charges kept up their form on the weekend as they dispatched West Brom with a 2-0 victory.

Phil Jones is in line to make his return to the side after a knock sustained against Swansea kept him sidelined for both the Newcastle and Albion games.

Wayne Rooney (knee), Nani and Anderson (both hamstring) are set to be out for a while still.

Ferguson might opt to rest Shinji Kagawa after the midfielder returned to action against the Baggies on Saturday.
